 Intermezzo (2015; revised 2025)

composed by Alan Lau

Originally written for the Sino-Electric Explorations concert in 2015, Intermezzo employs a minimalist style that evokes the sound of a flowing stream. This revised version features both heterophonic textures, common in Asian music, and contrapuntal interplay between the erhu and cello.

Two Miniature Pieces by Ravel

arranged by Alan Lau

i. Pavane from Ma mère l’Oye (1910)

ii. Minuet (1904?)

In commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the birth of French composer Maurice Ravel (1875–1937)—whose works sometimes reflect subtle Asian musical influences—this arrangement pairs a gentle pavane with a more lively minuet, echoing the Renaissance custom of contrasting dance forms such as the pavane and galliard.
