We celebrated Asian Heritage Month 2024 in a captivating double-bill concert blending Korean, Chinese, and Western jazz on May 3rd and 4th.
“East of the Sun” was un unforgettable performance. The musicians filled the theatres with cultural exploration and stunning musical diversity. The never seen before musical dialogues blended the best of Korean, Chinese and Western jazz.
Audience got to experience the Vancouver debut of SE:UM, the esteemed Korean ensemble known for their fusion of traditional Korean folk melodies and shamanistic rhythms.
Joining them on stage was Jasmine Jazz, the 2023 Westcoast Music Awards' Instrumental Artist of the Year. This group combined traditional Chinese instruments with contemporary jazz, creating a beautiful harmony of East and West with jazz classics, traditional Chinese folk, and original pieces.
Jasmine Jazz premiered new work by Jodi Proznick in a piece called " No Right Turn" and James Danderfer's new composition "Encounters".
"No Right Turn" is a new composition written in a crazy time signature (bar of 5 and 4/4), creating an off-kilter feeling. It explores the idea of questioning what is right, reflecting life's unexpected turns. Writing for Chinese instruments presents challenges with limited scales but offers polyrhythmic opportunities. It's not just a problem; it's an opportunity, mirroring life's complexities.

溫哥華中華樂團將於五月三和四日(星期五/六)晚上破天荒與韓國樂團SE:UM在新西敏 Anvil 中心以及溫哥華 Annex 劇院舉行兩場《中韓融和》East of the Sun融合爵士音樂會, 不容錯過.
中華樂團將連同加拿大著名爵士低音大提琴家 Jodi Proznick 以及遠道從韓國而來的 SE:UM 樂團, 為觀眾獻出一系列既包含中韓傳統音樂底蘊, 又帶有創新與爵士元素的精彩曲目, 更有華人聽眾熟悉的《月亮代表我的心》,《茉莉花》及《夜上海》. 是次音樂會為中華樂團與 Jodi Proznick 第六次的合作; 他們推出的專輯《爵士茉莉調》去年更榮獲了BreakOut West 年度器樂大獎, 此乃中樂團體在加拿大第一次獲得如此殊榮, 為中華音樂在北美的發展帶出一個嶄新的方向.

세움(SE:UM) 소개
세움은 각기 다른 악기와 장르로 음악 세계를 일궈온 뮤지션으로 이준(음악감독, 가야금, 꽹과리), 이재하(베이스), 박종상(트럼펫, 플루겔혼), 조한민(장구, 소리), 송하철(색소폰) 다섯 명으로 구성되어 있다. 국악과 재즈 등 다양한 분야에서 활동해 온 이들은 서로를 존중하며 다섯 악기가 조화롭게 융합할 수 있는 음악을 만들고자 한다.
세움은 지난 2015년 영국 에든버러 프린지 페스티벌에 참여하여 평점 만점을 기록한 이후 미국 워싱턴 D.C 재즈 페스티벌, UAE 코리아 페스티벌, 페낭 재즈 페스티벌, 나이지리아 코리아 페스티벌, PAMS CHOICE 선정 등 각종 해외 축제와 국제기관에 초청받아 연주활동을 하고 있다. 또한 한국 전통 탈춤과 미디어 아트, 미국과 일본의 재즈 연주자, 두바이의 전통음악 연주단, 클래식 오케스트라 등 다른 예술과의 협업을 통해 음악적 범위를 넓혀가고 있다. 폭발적인 연주력과 다양한 감정선을 넘나드는 ‘뮤직그룹 세움’의 연주는 국내에서만 아니라 해외에서도 그 가치를 높이 평가받고 있다.
